The weekly editions of the famous Tamil Magazine - Kalki serialized the Ponniyin Selven story gradually from 1950 to 29th October. Ponniyin Selven is a real story of Chola Prince Arulmozhivarman. The story depicts the earlier days of renowned Chola King Raja Raja Cholan(947-1014).

Being the second son of Sundara Cholan, Prince Arulmozhivarman was not considered the ruler of the Chola's throne first. But in a mysterious incident, Chola Crown-prince Aditha Karikalan Cholan was brutally murdered, cousin of Sundara Cholan, Uttama Cholan, was crowned.

After the death of Uttama Cholan, Prince Arulmozhivarman took over the responsibility of the Chola throne. He adopted the 'Rajakeshari' title, which stands for 'King among Kings,' when he became the empire of the Chola dynasty. He earned several titles based on the glory of military victories in the reign of Rajaraja Cholan.

After winning the Kandalur Salai battle, Prince Arulmozhivarman was bestowed with the 'Kandalur Salai Kalam-Arutta title. After a courageous and successful campaign against Pandyas, Prince Arulmozhivarman adopted 'Pandya Kula Shani.' Moreover, bringing Chola, Chera, and Pandya kingdoms under his domination, he adopted the' Mamudi Chola.'

As a devotee of Shaivism, Raja Raja Cholan received the Shivapada Shekhara title, representing his intense devotion to Lord Shiva. He was committed to preserving the collection of Tamil hymns & poems(Tirumurai), which addressed the fidelity to Lord Shiva. So, King Raja Raja Cholan was also known as ‘Tirumurai Kanda Cholan’.
